In seeking calling, students discover more about themselves as they study, practice what they learn and talk with professors, mentors and friends and all of this shapes’ identity. Each vocation, if it is lived generously and faithfully, will then involve times of lasting happiness and reward but also suffering and sacrifice. Everywhere he serves he does so with the permission of the local bishop. Gregory Nazianzen, “Against Julian”, 1st discourse, n. 99; disc. 37, alias 31 on St. A vocation is not something that you can switch like a profession or a career. For the reasons given above we cannot accept the definition of Lessius ; “Vocation is an affection, an inward force which makes a man feel impelled to enter the religious state, or some other state of life” De state vita deligendo, n. 56. Virgil Miller, CEO of Sander Manufacturing and chair of GCs Board of Directors, affirmed the power of these Christian principles in his own life when visiting campus Feb. 1, 2002. It seemed to him such an awful thing to mistake one’s vocation. They not only offer their own lives to the Father, as all Christians do, but they also stand before the Church and minister to the faithful as Christ ‘in person.’ Discovering and ultimately following your vocation gives the greatest glory and praise to our Creator.
Jeremiah Wright during the 2008 campaign). Occasionally, Pope Francis’ passionate pleas on behalf of social justice penetrate the public consciousness. But more typically, the relative lack of attention to non-stereotypical versions of Christianity reinforces the tendency of more secular people to treat religion as consistently promoting either extremism or, in milder forms, garden-variety conservative politics. If you are looking for an antidote to this impasse, I’d suggest Cathleen Kaveny’s inspiring book published earlier this year, “Prophecy Without Contempt: Religious Discourse in the Public Square.” Kaveny, a professor at Boston College and, yes, a Christian intellectual, suggests that religion’s most powerful public role involves “prophetic indictment” of our shortcomings. Martin Luther King Jr. is one model of this, Abraham Lincoln another. She insists that the most powerful prophets are tempered by “a lively sense of humility.” They understand both the limits of their knowledge and their own moral shortcomings. They also have “social humility regarding the status of other peoples, including one’s enemies, in God’s affections.” In other words, they don’t consign their foes to hell. Humble prophets are hard to find, especially in this election year, but they have a special vocation: to remind the skeptical that religion, which can indeed be divisive, is also a moral prod and an intellectual spark. In Durant, every resident we spoke with Friday saidthekillings wereabsolutely heartbreaking. The community is grief stricken over the killings of the two sisters in faith who committed their lives to Christianity through Catholicism. Sonny Williams is one of many Durant residents who personally knew the two victims from visiting the local clinic where thepair worked. He says the entire community is in mourning. “I thought it was horrible. Still think it’s horrible. I think it’s one of the worst things that has ever happened in Durant,” said Sonny Williams, who knew the victims. “I think they have to be sick. They have to be sick to do something like that,” Williams added. “I think it’s bad. Those people never did bother anybody. They were nice folks,” said Durant resident, Jimmie Perry. The active vocation of prayer and service to others is why the community has such a love for Sister Paula and Sister Margaret. Constantly cars drove by their home just looking at the pieces left behind. “It’s sad. It’s a sad situation because they did do a lot for the community.

Discovering and ultimately following your vocation gives the greatest glory and praise to our Creator. Often, too, we have to hesitate in our choice between two incompatible deeds or courses of action. However, this does not mean that we always automatically know for sure what we are called to do in life.
