When Brianna first began System 44 she was stuck, but it has been inspiring and remarkable to watch her confidence blossom along with her reading skills, said her teacher, Ms. Schroeder. Shes now more secure, self-sufficient and confident in everything she does. Through her work in the programs, Brianna improved her Lexile score a measurement of an individuals reading ability by 573 points. In Briannas case, her teacher made before and after school time available in addition to the strong implementation of the program during class time, said Sue Hall, induction coordinator/TOSA (teacher on special assignment) for Murrieta Valley Unified School District, in a recent interview. Brianna wanted to complete the System 44 portion of the program in fifth grade, as she struggled through fourth grade and had not yet had her breakthrough. Hall says it wasnt until fifth grade thanks in large part to family and teacher support that Brianna became really motivated to get through the foundational reading skills in System 44, prompting her to spend extra time working the program. Next, she moved on to the Read 180 portion of the program that works more intensely on reading comprehension at increasingly higher reading levels. I used to always say I cant, but today I say I can, Brianna said. I learned that I had to stop thinking negatively about myself and, since using System 44, Ive become more confident and proud. Now I love to read and am getting better grades in every subject. In the future, I want to become a teacher so I can help kids just like me. In addition to the award, Brianna will receive a $1,000 prize to be used toward her education, and her teacher will receive $1,000 worth of educational materials for her classroom.
